I designed the box and objects to visually convey a sense of unease, perception, and the idea of being watched. A television is a way to view things while also being an already known object, so it gives the viewer a sense of comfort. At the same time the television is not made from your standard materials so there is still a question about it. On the inside the objects are not what you would expect. The objects are not only geometric cube shapes, but they are also brighter colors than the rest of the piece. This helps even more to make the viewer question and possibly add to the feeling of unease. The panels of the objects being made from thread also helped to convey the idea I wanted to portray. The thread creates sides of the shapes that can be seen through to show that there are things that happen past what may be seen at surface level. Also, the way the threads overlap and the directions they travel help to emphasize the complexity behind all the ideas I wanted my piece to convey. Finally, with the project being so geometric and almost too perfect, it adds to unease and slight lack of emotion.
Notes:
My movies were Don't Worry Darling and Hunger Games.
I started by making my box so that I could know the exact size I needed to make the other pieces of my project. I started making my box by choosing the material, wood, because when I thought of older televisions I thought of the wood or fake wood that they had on the outside of them. The television being made from wood also takes the television slightly out of its normal context. The next step of making my box was deciding how I was going to make the door attach and stay on. This was originally a problem because the wood was too soft so the hinges would not stay screwed in. My solution to this problem was to make a canvas hinge instead. Finally, I worked on my objects that would go inside which I made by using a process that I discovered on an earlier project. The goal of these objects was to give the idea of complexity while also representing television static and wires that are on the inside of televisions.
