Gregor's Room

Gregor's Room
Paper
10" x 3" x 7 3/4"

Reflection Statement:

These sculptures communicate the thoughts and feelings I had about the house and room while reading 'The Metamorphosis'. While exploring the materials to build the sculptures, I wanted to focus on still keeping the piece neat and structured because I did not want to use the paper pulp method and also I felt that the pulp method looked a little gross and that is not the idea I took away from the actual room structure in the story. I decided to include the rolled paper method because it was the best way for me to make pieces that stayed together that were also structurally solid and neat.  I felt the work was lacking the correct color scheme/execution, so I wish I had mixed colors together to get a more muted palette to better fit my perception of the story. I want to keep exploring the use of colored inks because I really like the way they mix together.Because I want to keep exploring the colored inks, I want to learn more about specifically the different techniques you can use to achieve the different desired looks. I am also curious about what would happen when you mix the inks with other different materials. This piece allowed me to explore the idea of working slower and on different portions at once. With this project you can only work on something before you can no longer work on it without it falling apart. So, you definitely had to be patient with this project. The making of this work expressed new ideas such as how to roll and mold paper, in a simple process, to get interesting and needed shapes and forms. I especially discovered when making my spoon.
